“A client once asked me, ‘So what are business chakras?’ My answer began with, ‘I’m so glad you asked.’ Because before we can talk about business chakras, we first need to step back and ask: What are chakras?”

Chakras are energy systems that generate and direct specific energies based on universal forces and emotions. The concept originated in the Hindu Vedas, where five initial energy systems mirrored the five senses (touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste). Each sense was symbolized by a shape: square, circle, triangle, half-moon, and dumpling.

The term chakra comes from the word chakravartin, meaning “the king who turns the wheel of his empire.” In this metaphor, the king was the guiding force — the one who held answers and direction for the community. People relied on their ruler to lead them through challenges and despair.

Later, the Rigveda — the oldest translatable scripture in Hinduism — revealed additional energy systems. Among them was the goddess Kunamnama, whose name means “she who is bent or coiled.” Her presence represented two additional energetic systems: intuition (the sixth sense) and connection to a higher power. Kunamnama brought spirituality, linking humans to divine guidance, God, or Source.

Through centuries of interpretation, philosophers distilled these systems into what we now recognize as the seven primary chakras. They are the baseline for all others.

From Birth to Breath: The Foundation of Energy Systems

From the moment of conception, two energies — feminine (left) and masculine (right) — combine. As the embryo grows, chakras develop alongside it. When the baby is born and takes its first breath, the chakras are activated, along with the senses.

This energy system develops in the womb and is fully developed by 12 months in mammals. As humans, we learn who to trust and distrust based on our basic needs being met.

The breath is our constant connection to Source — whether you call it God, the Universe, angels, or higher consciousness. Without breath, our body ceases to function. Science explains this through the balance between conscious and unconscious systems: the Medulla Oblongata handles automatic responses like breathing and circulation, while the frontal cortex governs intentional thought, memory, emotions, and problem-solving.

Humans cannot function without both. Similarly, chakras must work together, harmonizing energy across the body. Misalignment can begin as early as infancy, influenced by environmental and emotional shifts. Over time, our thought patterns continue to affect this balance.

The Seven Primary Chakras

  • Crown (Sahasrara): Connection to higher consciousness and purpose. Unites conscious and subconscious knowledge.
  • Third Eye (Ajna): Subconscious intuition, clarity, imagination, vision.
  • Throat (Vishuddha): Communication, expression, inspiration, relationships.
  • Heart (Anahata): Compassion, empathy, forgiveness, trust, emotional regulation. Acts as the bridge between physical and nonphysical energies.
  • Solar Plexus (Manipura): Identity, confidence, action, personal power.
  • Sacral (Swadisthana): Creativity, pleasure, flow, adaptability.
  • Root (Muladhara): Stability, grounding, safety, unity, trust.

When aligned, these energy centers support health and vitality. When blocked, other chakras overcompensate — just like one organ taking on the function of another when illness arises. Over time, imbalance creates strain across the entire system.

Business Chakras: Energy Systems in Organizations

Businesses are their own entities, with their own energy systems. Departments, employees, and even customer interactions generate energy. When aligned, businesses thrive. When misaligned, dysfunction spreads.

Think of employees like chakras. Each has a distinct function. If one fails — an employee calls in sick or underperforms — others step in. Short-term compensation works, but if this imbalance continues, stress and burnout spread through the organization.

Departments mirror chakras too:

  • Operations = Root
  • Innovation = Sacral
  • Leadership = Solar Plexus
  • Culture = Heart
  • Marketing/Communications = Throat
  • Strategy = Third Eye
  • Mission = Crown

When one “business chakra” is blocked — poor communication, weak leadership, lack of innovation, or unstable finances — the entire organization feels the impact. Toxic culture, retention issues, or declining revenue often stem from deeper misalignment.

Passion Over Skills

I’ve always believed passion overrides skills. Tools, platforms, and processes can be learned. Passion cannot. Employees aligned with a company’s mission emanate positive energy.

I experienced this firsthand as a Digital Marketing Manager at a biotechnology company. I had no formal science background, but my passion for supporting advancements in cancer therapy fueled me. For five years, I created content, learned terminology, and drove marketing alignment. Passion carried me through the discomfort of being outside my comfort zone — and led to success.

Today, my passion is helping businesses achieve alignment through digital marketing. Content marketing excites me: finding the perfect keywords for SEO, repurposing content across email and social, and weaving everything together into campaigns that convert. Checking analytics feels like Christmas morning — a reflection of energy flowing back in response to aligned effort.

How to Balance Your Business Chakras

  • Value your employees fully.
  • Cultivate gratitude for wins, big or small.
  • Avoid obsessing over losses — focus on what is working.
  • Encourage a culture of fun, creativity, and collaboration.
  • Invest in employee health and well-being.
  • Always reconnect to the “why” behind your mission.

Alignment doesn’t just solve problems; it creates energy that sustains growth, stability, and joy in work.

Final Thought

Life is meant to be fun — and so is business. When businesses align their chakras, they not only thrive but also serve their communities and contribute to something greater.

So I’ll ask:
Which chakra in your business feels most out of alignment today?
